UBC Women impress in season opener

War Memorial Gym, B.C. - The Thunderbirds looked strong all night long. Kate Johnson lead a run for the Lady T-Birds with three straight buckets, one being a nice step back jumper sending the crowd into a uproar. The run gave the Lady T-birds a 4 point lead to close a tight knit 1st half.

Starting the second half Johnson’s hot ending to the 1st carried over as she scored four of the first six points just minutes into the start of the 3rd. The lady Huskies then fought back throughout the quarter and in the last minute of the 3rd Sabine Dukate hit a big three giving the Lady Huskies a 48 to 44 lead over UBC women. Just seconds before the quarter ended Keylyn Filewich made a tough layup bringing the Lady Tbirds within 2 but it was Hailey Counsel’s three in the closing seconds that put the Lady Tbirds out front 49 to 48 ending the 3rd.

Counsel, Penn and Johnson sparked a 12 to 2 run to start the fourth but Sabine Dukate and the Lady Sask wouldn’t go away. Dukate poured in 20 points and Megan Ahlstorm added 13 to steady the wave but Jessica Hanson and Keylyn Filewich were too much down the finishing stretch. Filewich lead the way with 20 and 9reb while Hanson added 19 pts and 5 ast to outlast the Lady huskies 71-64.
