November 8, 2019

Vancouver, B.C. - The Birds play their Home Opener this weekend November 8th & 9th against the Calgary Dinos. The Dino’s were the only team in the 17 team Canada West conference to not play in Week 1 so their on court product is yet to be determined, though their men’s side are the defending conference champions. Both Thunderbirds teams are poised for strong seasons as the men’s team look to be led by 5th year guard Jadon Cohee (20 ppg, 5 rebs, 4 ast) and 3rd year big Grant Shepard (16.6 ppg, 9 rebs). The women’s team are seeing the quick rebuild from a few years ago paying off as 4th year big Keylyn Filewich (22ppg, 8reb, 2ast, 1steal, 1block) and 5th year guard Jessica Hanson (15ppg, 5reb, 5ast) have both continued to improve each year of their USPORTS Careers and don’t seem to be slowing down.

Last year the Birds conference records were (W) 14-6 (M) 17-3. The Dino’s were (W) 17-3 (M) 20-0. The Calgary men saw major changes this past offseason with a load of transfers and prep school players, while the women have mostly stayed the same returning their top scorers from last season in Erin McIntosh and Bobbi-Jo Colburn. We can expect a big turnout from the T-Bird home crowd as this will be the first time in 5 years that Calgary has played at UBC’s War Memorial Gym as the last 7 games were all played in Calgary. In addition, the birds will have special alumni recognition’s taking place between games.

Tickets are available online or can be purchased at the door. Women tip-off at 6:00pm and Men tip-off at 8:00pm.
