February Update from Coach Hanson

We had a tremendous win in Lacey, Washington Saturday night over the St. Martin's Saints who were ranked #12 nationally and #1 in the GNAC.  More impressively, St. Martin's has been undefeated at home all season and our team had to come back from an early 26-13 deficit to be tied 34-34 at half. Our guys did a great job controlling tempo and sticking with the game plan which involved taking advantage of our size mismatches and limiting open shots from St. Martin's deep snipers. In the second half, we did just that and sophomore center, Julian Roche, went to work in his office as he hit the go-ahead points with 5 seconds left.  To watch the final seconds, GO HERE!

The win gets us to 10-10 on the season and two games back from a playoff spot. With eight games remaining, we have a lot of optimism and hard work ahead.

At home this week, we face Northwest Nazarene on Thursday who is now tied with St. Martin's in first place.  This will be another huge test for our program in our playoff hunt.  On Saturday night, we play Central Washington and a chance to avenge our overtime loss in Ellensburg to the Wildcats.  We are excited to be back in Burnaby in front of our home crowd for the next three games.

I hope you'll join us for final home games of the 2018-19 season!

Thank You to Our Supporters > Grand Prize to Charlotte to Meet Jay Triano

A special thank you to goes out to Jesse Leavitt from Valiant Financial who has been a big supporter of the SFU Men's Basketball program the last three years.  At our annual SFU Men's Basketball Alumni Golf Tournament in August, Jesse's generous bid won him the grand auction prize to Charlotte, North Carolina to meet Jay Triano, watch the NBA Hornets play which also included a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Championship game between Gonzaga and North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  This was a tremendously rare weekend of basketball.

Jesse - with his friend Aleem Bandali - are pictured above court-side with distinguished alumnus, Jay Triano, who donated his time, energy, and tickets to these great experiences.  We want to thank Jay for taking the time to support his alma mater in such a meaningful way.

A special thank you to Vision Travel - SFU Men's Basketball travel provider - who donated two round-trip flights to Charlotte, NC.  It is extremely exciting to see what our extended SFU family can accomplish when we work together.

Thank you to all our alumni, supporters and fans that helped make this happen!

ALUMNI UPDATE > Peter Guarasci named GM & Head Coach of Bandits

Congratulations to SFU Alum, All-American and 2000 Sydney Summer Olympian, Peter Guarasci, who was named General Manager and Head Coach of the new Fraser Valley Bandits franchise of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).  Peter will use his 12+ years of professional playing experience in Spain, Italy & Germany to recruit and sign some of the top players to play in Abbotsford for the Bandits this season. Peter spent several years with Canada Basketball and our national program developing some of the top big men in the country.  Most recently, Peter was the head coach at UBC-Okanagan for seven seasons.

Pete's collegiate career was outstanding finishing top 10 in blocks in the MAAC from 1992-1994 while playing DI for Fairfield in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After two years, Guarasci transferred to Simon Fraser during our time in the NAIA.  Pete was a two-time MVP and an All-American in 1996.

Congrats to Pete on his next step in the basketball profession!

Surprise Visit at Seattle Pacific > Hall of Famer, Larry Clark

Donning the #23 jersey he wore during his career here at Simon Fraser, all-time leading rebounder and 1987 Hall of Fame inductee, Larry Clark was nice enough to give us a pre-game and post-game talk when we were at SPU last Thursday.  Larry is such a kind man and spoke to our team about his special time at SFU.  The passion behind his ability to rebound and what it takes to compete in the league each and every night was inspiring and had us fired up!  We thank Larry for spending time with us, cheering us on whistle to whistle.  Not only that, he delivered Bubble Tea for the entire team for post-game.

THANKS LARRY!
