Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley Girls battle in All-Star Game

Fraser Valley sweeps the Lower Mainland in Futures and Seniors games
April 5, 2018

St. Thomas More Collegiate - On Tuesday night 60 Girls from the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley met for the Futures and Seniors All-Star Game hosted by St. Thomas More Collegiate. For the “Futures”, players who won’t be graduating this year, this is an opportunity to show what the Province can look forward to talent-wise for years to come before they suit up for their respective club teams. For the Seniors, who will be graduating come June, this game serves as one more opportunity to suit up in their high school jerseys before their post-secondary lives begin.

With many players sporting new tans, the result of a game following Spring Break, both teams started out slow as the All-Stars from both teams figured out how to play with one another. One thing was clear - no one was afraid to shoot, with shots raining down from all over the court. The Fraser Valley Seniors would take an early 11 point lead as nine different players would get on the scoreboard. The Lower Mainland All-Stars would not go away as Tanis Metcalfe would score 10 of her game high 24 points in the second quarter to tie the game 37-37 at the half.

As the girls grew comfortable with one another, things began to click and the slow start, which also may have been a result of three weeks off since the season ended, was no more as both teams would score 20+ points in the third quarter. The second half was truly a back-and-forth battle as neither team would gain a lead larger than five points. When it came down to the wire, it was Sienna Lenz who took charge for the Fraser Valley scoring seven points in the final frame including the eventual game winner. With a chance to tie the Lower Mainland teams attempt just rolled out and the game came to a close 82-80 in favour of the Fraser Valley.

In the “Futures” game a strong Fraser Valley Team would come out on top 107-78. High scorers were Tavia Rowell of Walnut Grove (24 points) and Jessica Clarke of St. Thomas Aquinas (23 points).
